A referral to a neurologist can be worrying, especially if you were not aware your symptoms could be linked to the nervous system, is it only natural to ask “what does a neurologist do?” if you know you need to see one. Neurology is one of the most complex areas of medicine. A neurologist specialists in diagnosing, treating and managing disorders relating to the brain and the nervous system. The nervous system includes the brain but also the spinal cord and nerves.

A trained neurologist knows the anatomy, correct function and conditions that can impact the function of your nervous system. The nervous system is essentially your body’s control or its command system. It controls everything we do.

Diseases and conditions of the Nervous System

A trained neurologist will get to the bottom of any nervous system symptoms. However, some of the most common neurological disorders include:

Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

Spinal cord injury and brain injury

Epilepsy

Concussion

Encephalitis

Cerebral palsy

Migraine and headache

Meningitis

Multiple sclerosis

Parkinson’s disease

Stroke

There are many other neurological conditions that a neurologist can help with too. Similarly, some patients experience neurological symptoms that may not be linked to a diagnosable conditions but are still able to be treated effectively.

How does a neurological diagnosis work?

When you attend an appointment with your neurologist it is important to understand how they might test and examine you to help arrange the right treatment. Your neurologist will ask about your family’s medical history as well as your personal medical history. They will also ask about any medications you take or have taken in the past and explore your current symptoms. The appointment will also involve a neurological examination which will test different aspects of your nervous system including:

Gait and balance

Coordination and reflexes

Muscle strength

Sensation

Vision, hearing and speech

Mental health and mood

You may need further testing to confirm any diagnosis. Your neurologist may also order additional blood and urine tests to help understand any potential diagnosis. Your neurologist can also quickly arrange any important scans to fully check the functionality of your brain or other elements of the nervous system.

Understanding what does a neurologist do

Getting a better understand of neurology can make the experience less stressful. While any medical appointment and examination is a worry, if you take the time to understand what’s going to happen and why, you can be better prepared.

Dr Dominic Paviour is a highly experienced London neurologist helping patients with a vast range of neurological conditions. Get in touch today to discuss your symptoms and arrange your first appointment.

Your GP is responsible for managing your general health, but they are not a specialist in any specific area of medicine. If you visit your GP with a number of symptoms, you may need referral to a specialist. To answer the question, why would I be referred to a neurologist, it’s worth looking at the symptoms that may lead to this.

Many conditions and symptoms require specialist diagnosis and treatment. This is where specialist medical departments come into play, including neurology. Neurology covers many different conditions relating to the nervous system including migraine, seizures, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. Neurologists can assess your neurological symptoms, reach a diagnosis and help design an effective treatment plan.

Referral to Neurology

A neurologist is specially trained in treating conditions affecting the nervous system. The nervous system includes your brain, nerves and spinal cord as well as related muscles and blood circulation. Conditions that impact the nervous system and related areas can cause chronic pain, memory loss, speech problems and more. These conditions often require testing and treatments that a GP is not qualified or experienced in.

Symptoms that lead to neurology referral include:

Persistent or chronic headache

Unexplained numbness

Chronic pain with no obvious cause

Tremors or uncontrolled shaking

Memory loss

There are many other symptoms that may need neurological attention that your GP can advise and arrange necessary referrals.

Neurological Conditions

Neurologists treat a far-reaching range of conditions including head injuries, chronic headaches and migraine and specific disorders and syndromes.

Multiple sclerosis is also another neurological condition that results in chronic pain and many additional symptoms. MS is also a progressive and degenerative disease that impacts the brain and spinal cord, but the condition can be managed with the right treatment plan from your neurologist.

Similarly, seizures and epilepsy should involve regular neurology visits. If you experience a seizure then it is likely you will need a neurology referral. Neurologists can also diagnose epilepsy and carry out other testing necessary to find the cause of any individual seizure.

Other neurological symptoms such as memory loss and dizziness could be caused by several conditions. An experienced neurologist will work with you to find the cause of your symptoms, provide a diagnosis where necessary and find a way to manage and alleviate your symptoms.

Contact us today to discuss your neurological symptoms and arrange an appointment.

If you have seen a GP or a Consultant who has advised you should have an MRI Scan, you may wonder what this involves so read on to find out more.

How is an MRI Scan Different from an X-Ray?

An X-Ray uses radiation to take a picture of the inside of a body. This is often more readily available than an MRI Scan and can quickly diagnose an injury or mass. An MRI Scan offers a far more detailed view of tissue and organs so is ideal for looking at the brain.

What is an MRI Scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to take pictures of the spine or brain. The technology helps distinguish between different tissues so the result is a detailed picture that a Consultant can use to diagnose a range of conditions.

Who Can have an MRI Scan?

The NHS states that Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is very safe and most people are able to have the procedure. However, in some instances, an MRI scan may not be recommended. You can find out more information here.

What Happens During an MRI Scan?

The scan does not hurt at all as you will lie still on a bed that moves into the scanner. The Radiographer will explain the process but will move to a different room to operate the scanner. They will talk to you through the inbuilt intercom and at times it will make a loud tapping noise as the electric current is turned on and off.
The whole process takes less than an hour and a half. Afterwards, your Consultant will be provided with the images so they can make an accurate diagnosis.

What Happens After the MRI Scan?

The scan is usually carried out during a day clinic so you won’t need to stay in hospital unless you are already an inpatient. You can carry on as normal afterwards unless advised otherwise or you have had a sedative.
Your Radiologist or Consultant will review the scan and discuss with colleagues to agree on the diagnosis and treatment plan. Your GP or Consultant will then discuss the results with you, usually 2-3 weeks later.

Dr Paviour’s Approach

Dr Paviour uses the latest technology to diagnose and find treatment for neurological conditions. He will discuss your symptoms and medical history during your private consultation as well as carry out a physical examination and relevant tests. These might include blood tests, imaging of the nervous system (MRI Scan or CT Scan) and electrical testing of nerves and muscles (EMG) or brain function (EEG).

Dr Paviour is highly rated as a neurologist in London, not only by his peers but most importantly, by his patients. Feel free to contact us so we can discuss any symptoms and how Dr Paviour can help.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. A neurologist is a medically qualified doctor dealing with such conditions. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of disease that involve the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems.

Neurologists also manage neurology conditions that affect;

The coverings of the brain (the meninges)

The blood supply of the nervous system and muscles (as these are controlled by the nervous system)

Neurologists in the UK often develop an interest in particular neurological disorders. These could be dementia, movement disorders, headaches or epilepsy. Sleep disorders, chronic pain management, or neuromuscular diseases are also areas of focus. However, neurologists in the UK, who are on the GMC specialist register for neurology, will have had comprehensive training in all of these areas.

Advice about Neurology

Common reasons for seeking advice might be because you have one or a range of symptoms. A headache, numbness or weakness or unsteadiness could be a sign of a neurological condition. Transient loss of consciousness or awareness (“fits” or “faints”), tremors or memory disorders may also be a sign.

A neurologist may refer the patient to a neurosurgeon when surgical intervention is required. Dr Paviour has a close working relationship with a number of colleagues in neurology and can advise on the best person to see if that is required.

About Dr Paviour – Neurology Expert

The nervous system can have a huge impact on all areas of your body, and it is often a complicated and sophisticated system to try and understand.
