This intense electrical activity is called ‘epileptic activity’. There are many different types of seizures. They can be classed by where in the brain the epileptic activity starts.

Focal (partial) seizures – In these seizures, the epileptic activity starts in just a part of your brain. You may stay alert in this type of seizure. Sometimes, epileptic activity starts as a focal seizure, spreads to the rest of your brain and becomes a generalised seizure.

Generalised seizures – These seizures involve epileptic activity in both halves of your brain. You lose consciousness during this type of seizure, although sometimes it can be so brief that no one notices. The muscles in your body may stiffen and/or jerk. You may fall down.

Nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a layer of myelin. The myelin protects the nerve and helps electrical signals travel fast and effectively. MS is known as a demyelinating inflammatory disorder because the myelin becomes damaged.

The NHS details MS as a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild. In many cases, it’s possible to treat symptoms. Average life expectancy is slightly reduced for people with MS.

Multiple Sclerosis is most commonly diagnosed in people in their 20s and 30s. However, it can develop at any age. It’s about 2 to 3 times more common in women than men and is one of the most common causes of disability in younger adults.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

The symptoms of MS do vary widely from person to person. The varying indicators can affect any part of the body.

The main symptoms are highlighted below.

• Fatigue
• Difficulty walking
• Vision problems, such as blurred vision
• Problems controlling the bladder
• Numbness or tingling in different parts of the body

Remission can be followed by a sudden flare-up of symptoms, known as a relapse. Relapses can last from a few weeks to few months. Often, after around 10 years, around half of people with relapsing remitting MS will go on to develop secondary progressive MS.

In secondary progressive MS, symptoms gradually worsen and there are fewer or no periods of remission.
The least common form of MS is primary progressive MS. In this type, symptoms gradually get worse over time and there are no periods of remission.

How is an MRI Scan Different from an X-Ray?

An X-Ray uses radiation to take a picture of the inside of a body. This is often more readily available than an MRI Scan and can quickly diagnose an injury or mass. An MRI Scan offers a far more detailed view of tissue and organs so is ideal for looking at the brain.

What is an MRI Scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to take pictures of the spine or brain. The technology helps distinguish between different tissues so the result is a detailed picture that a Consultant can use to diagnose a range of conditions.

Who Can have an MRI Scan?

The NHS states that Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is very safe and most people are able to have the procedure. However, in some instances, an MRI scan may not be recommended. You can find out more information here.

What Happens During an MRI Scan?

The scan does not hurt at all as you will lie still on a bed that moves into the scanner. The Radiographer will explain the process but will move to a different room to operate the scanner. They will talk to you through the inbuilt intercom and at times it will make a loud tapping noise as the electric current is turned on and off.
The whole process takes less than an hour and a half.  Afterwards, your Consultant will be provided with the images so they can make an accurate diagnosis.

What Happens After the MRI Scan?

The scan is usually carried out during a day clinic so you won’t need to stay in hospital unless you are already an inpatient. You can carry on as normal afterwards unless advised otherwise or you have had a sedative.
Your Radiologist or Consultant will review the scan and discuss with colleagues to agree on the diagnosis and treatment plan. Your GP or Consultant will then discuss the results with you, usually 2-3 weeks later.
